As far as purity goes- was this written before or after the "artist" (personally, I don't see any art, so I'd be more inclined to refer to who(m)ever left this as an "author"- it's being published on the web, so that counts... unless you want to count the photo of the writing, in which case we're back to "artist", but that assumes the "author" also took the picture... not too likely) washed his/her hands?
Back to the art issue- Andy Warhol once said "Art is anything you can get away with." This from a guy who got famous for painting a can of soup.
By that definition, this would be art. So would a lot of other things most of us wouldn't consider art.
Here's something to consider- Why is a representation of something, say, a photo or painting of a sunset, considered "art," but the sunset itself, regardless of how glorious or magnificent or fabulous it might be (or have been), isn't? Isn't Nature the purest form of art? Tropical butterflies, blue frogs, stratified canyons, rainbows... I'm just sayin'... |

Art is the reflection of a society, nothing more, nothing less... But that encompasses such a wonderful range of personal interpretations.
I leave you with this piece of toilet poetry (possibly comedy/base-art)
and I quote from the wall of many an English toilet...
"Some come here to shit and stink, and others come to sit and think, but I come here to scratch my balls and read the writing on the walls!" annonymous.... |

"Critical acclaim and financial gain are supposedly the only two possible motivators? Who came up with that?"
Not the point, my friend. Some guy claimed that, for something to be art, it must not be for critical acclaim of financial gain, it must only be for the sake of itself. |

I'm sorry but vandalism has always upset me, because I can put myself if the position of someone who has spend a great deal of money to be kind enough to offer restrooms, and their kindness if repaid by such acts of defilement. Imagine if you invite some people over for a get together, and they all randomly use the bathroom in your home and after they all leave, you go into you bathroom and see phone numbers and crude jokes written on your walls with a sharpie. I can't see how this is any different. |

never mind the etymology of the word 'since.'
calling a sign illiterate means that the sign can't read or write.
dude, if you ever find a piece of metal, wood or other stiff material with letters painted on it that can read and write, you will know you are high. |

Oh the irony, Guest_Jim. Claiming that not only is the graffiti a sign, but also it does not know how to read or write. |

Pronunciation:
\ˈsin(t)s\
Function:
adverb
Etymology:
Middle English sins, contraction of sithens, from sithen, from Old English siththan, from sīth tham after that, from sīth after, late + tham, dative of thæt that; akin to Old High German sīd later and perhaps to Latin setius to a lesser degree
Date:
15th century
1 : from a definite past time until now 2 : before the present time : ago 3 : after a time in the past : subsequently
Above was quoted directly from Merriam-Webster online dictionary:
"url"
It's an interesting thought, but there is no "purity" in art. Personally, I go by the definition of art as "anything produced by humans that was not from base needs". Therefore, everything you see, from the glass-and-steel skyscrapers to the simple hammer, is art. |

Hey Jim, you're retarded! According to the American Heritage Dictionary, "since," when used as a conjunction, such as in the picture above, means "because; inasmuch as". e.g. Since you're the real pseudo-intellectual here, your comment is hilariously ironic.
I think this picture is great! |

Guest_Jim:
Since is a modifier preposition.
It also means: after, afterward, ago, already, as, because, considering, for, from, hence, later, now, past, subsequently, therefore, whereas, and probably some others I haven't said.
They should, however, replace 'is' with 'has been'.
But it's interesting at least. : d |

Guest_Jim, is correct, pseudo-intellectuals (such as himself) are funny. The word "Since" can be used as a synonym of because; or the term "inasmuch as". And if you don't believe me, just ask Webster's. "url"
If you're going to flame someone on the internet, please, at least do it intelligently.
As for the sign itself, a person finds art where they find beauty. If you find beauty in writings on a bathroom wall, then it is art in your mind and heart. |

Honestly, man.
Grammar?
I do hope you realize that this is the internet.
*Grammar Nazi Counter-response*
The use of "since" here means "after", as in "after an event". The "event" is abstract, it being whenever bathroom signs were done for no acclaim, etc.
I was under the impression Grammar Hitler fled to Argentina, not Brazil.
Anyways:
While I think that calling bathroom graffiti the purest form of art is a tad extreme, I think it definitely brings up an interesting point. And while I know that some art is done for praise and/or monetary gain, a whole hell of a lot is done for more personal reasons. Painting is sometimes therapeutic. Same with music.
Maybe it's simply a matter of who views it and their relation to the artist that defines this argument.
Maybe the purest art is that which only the artist sees.
Or maybe this is just to keep you occupied whilst on a "bombin' run".

The sign is illiterate. "Since" means "from that time". The word they want is "Because" or, "for this reason". Pseudo-intellectuals are so funny. |
