This is ridiculous. Fibre to the home (FTTH) service is Japan is not free. It costs something in the order of $50-80USD per month if purchased straightup, or slightly less (30-40% portion of the 80-120$USD per month total) of part of a package of VOIP and TV-over-fibre with a 2-5 year lock-in period.
Also, the telecommunication compaines have been spending enourmous amounts of money stringing fibre along the roadway telephone poles all through the densely populated city and near city areas, adding to the ugly problem of hanging wires.
